What is a Registered Piano Technician, and Why it Matters

A Registered Piano Technician (RPT) is a professional who specializes in the maintenance, repair, and tuning of pianos. The RPT credential is awarded by the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), an organization dedicated to promoting the highest standards of piano service and technology. Today, there are fewer than 2,000 RPTs in all of North America.

To become an RPT, individuals must undergo a series of three rigorous exams administered by the PTG covering all aspects of piano tuning and repair. The exam assesses their knowledge and skills in various aspects of piano technology, including tuning, regulation, repair, and general piano maintenance.

The RPT designation provides assurance to piano owners that they are entrusting their instruments to a qualified professional with expertise in piano maintenance and repair. It is a mark of distinction within the piano industry, signifying a technician’s commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development.
